Yayoi Kusama in Brisbane

With my first week back to work, I’ve suddenly found myself not being too busy in the office and had the flexibility to leave early. I’ve decided I’ll take this chance to visit the Gallery of Modern Art here in Brisbane as they are running YAYOI KUSAMA: LIFE IS THE HEART OF A RAINBOW exhibit.

The Artist, and The Exhibit

The exhibition features the works of Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese artist popular internationally for her unique expressions and perspective thru her art, so charming you won’t help but stare and be captivated by them.

In GOMA, the features span from her early works up to the most recent. It says the body of work you will find there is as early as the 1950s.

And to note, access is free of charge (head on to the bottom of this page to know more via GOMA site).

When and How To Get There

Our friend Phoebe suggested we visited there on a weekday as it tends to be really busy on weekends. And true enough, though we went on a Thursday afternoon there’s still a line to get there. I really recommend you go there earlier than 3PM if you want an leisurely visit in the PM.

The feature started since 4 Nov last year, and will run until 11 Feb 2018 so you still have time to visit. So head on to QAGOMA: Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art in Stanley Pl, South Brisbane QLD 4101 so you won’t miss out.

Our Visit | See All Pics Above

Learn from my experience and don’t go there past 4PM cause taking into account that you will still have to line up, you might end up not seeing all of Yayoi’s work of art. However, I’ve seen enough to be in awe, honestly.

We started by visiting the obliteration room (2002 – ongoing). In here, you will be given stickers to put in the room however you like. I’ve seen this in GOMA’s Instagram page prior to opening and it used to be an all-white room. When we got there, it’s all covered with colorful stickers. It’s a fun activity I can recommend for families with kids (but Nikko and I enjoyed it nonetheless).

Then we proceeded to see her body of work in the form paintings, soft-sculpture, assemblage, the iconic 'infinity rooms’.

It’s a perfect activity to give your eyes a feast of colour, and mesmerising displays only Yayoi Kusama can deliver.

xx, Belle.
